Teacher and coach

Inaugural post

As my wife and I were anticipating the birth of our first son several years ago, we wanted to have a parent at home with him full time. Since I was between jobs at the time and her job was stable and paid reasonably well, it made sense for me to be the stay-at-home parent. As The First approached pre-school age and then school age, we were generally happy with the arrangement and decided to try homeschooling.

For the next several years, I was a homeschooling dad to the First, and later to his two younger brothers, Ice and The Maker. For a while, my wife’s job situation was in transition and I re-entered the (paid) workforce on a part-time and then full-time basis, and my wife and her mother helped out with the homeschooling duties. Recently, The First and The Ice (now 13 and 11) decided to try “regular” school, and our job situations have switched back around to my wife working full-time and me working part-time from home, so I once again find myself in the role of schooldad.

I decided to start this blog as a way to share some of my experiences as a father to three boys, two of whom are currently in regular school and one of whom is currently at home. I say “currently” because there’s the possibility that the First or the Ice may want to go back to homeschooling, and/or that the Maker (now 8 ) may want to try regular school. At any rate, this seems like a good place to write about some of our adventures, so I hope you enjoy reading about them.

My wife came up with the nicknames a couple of years ago when she started her blog (at http://www.theglowingedge.com ). I think she got the idea from Matt Baldwin (at http://www.defectiveyeti.com ), one of our favorite bloggers, who uses nicknames for his wife and son when he mentions them in his posts. The initial idea was to be able to write about family members and be at least somewhat respectful of their privacy, though I don’t know that anything is really private once it shows up on the internet.

The Maker got his nickname because he is forever engaged in different creative projects: building, drawing, etc. The Ice got his because he has always been the most laid back and relaxed of the three. And the First, as you say, is kind of self-explanatory.
