I wanna put up a stand outside where I can play my music, and at the end of the day people will give me money in my case, like they used to do in the old days.
-The Maker, age 8
All three of my boys have shown an interest in music. The First is a drummer, the Ice is a guitar player, and now the Maker has taken up the piano. He's been taking lessons for about 2 months now, and is really enjoying it. (I suspect a lot of his enjoyment is due to his teacher, whom he adores, so here's a shout out to Sherrill Ellis at the Neighborhood Academy of Music.) He spends a fair bit of time most days either working on songs or exercises from his books, or playing songs that he has figured out on his own. Recent faves include Touch Me (by The Doors), Happy Birthday (requested by his mom), and Pop Goes the Weasel.
I can tell that his ear for pitch is improving. When he's picking out the notes of a new song that he likes, he can usually tell if one or more notes isn't the right one, but he sometimes has trouble finding the one that is right. After I help him find the right one, he usually gets one of those "yeah, that's it" expressions on his face.
